Exposition:

In its historical journey, education has figured prominently (whether by default or general proxy) in: religion, philosophy, politics/government, economy, business and society, as to suggest its pivotal role in human culture, institutions, civilization and progress. While often exploited, its key role has not always been recognized or compensated by policy-makers and education’s stakeholders/ leaders. The GCE forum blazes a new path in Christian classical, critical and contemporary discourses on education in Africa. It aims to: propel  education in Africa to new levels via the Christian faith channel, traversing  antiquity to (post-) modernity; engage with African issues/problems via new thinking, research, analysis; and foster the desired self-/social-transformation via a new ordering of society/social offers for Africa’s new citizens.

2018 SALT Conference Theme and Description:

MODELING THE NEXT (GLOBAL) ECONOMY:

BEYOND COLONIAL AND CULTURAL AGITATION TO CRITICAL

CONCEPTUALIZATION OF POLITICS, ECONOMY AND FAITH

FOR TRANSFORMATION

The power of ‘economy’–whether local or global–looms large over our world, societies and lives, as to suggest its relative importance in human and governmental functioning, esp. when ‘economy’ is  centrally defined by ‘financial flows’. As a ‘tool’ of governance, ‘finances’ form a triad with ‘law’  and ‘military’, and the implication of this union, from ancient times, is borne out by the oft-quoted  example that illustrates a definition of ‘politics’: ‘in the conduct of global politics, economic status must be backed by military capacity’ (Oxford Dictionary of English, ed. Angus Stevenson, 2010:

1375).This notion anticipates a regnant conception of the economy as the triad of ‘production,

distribution and consumption’. These activities are presumed best ‘managed’ by the government  via ‘laws’ and the agents that are supposed to enforce them.

In re-conceiving the true relation between the triads in any combinations, we must unveil the hidden  ideologies which frame them. In judging the current state of our economy, its re-conceptualizing must proceed via critical analysis of human, cultural, social, religious, political and    economic structures associated with Africa’s largely undeveloped ‘rural’ villages, as opposed to its  equally unplanned emerging ‘urban’ centers. The above triads are manifestly operative in both

settings, as to suggest a further constructive engagement with their respective ‘economies’ and the  way for the future of Africa. In shaping the next global economy, we must identify for engagement  spheres of operation of each triadic element in Africa–e.g. the (neo-)patrimonial/ patron-client system–and their regnant values or dominant beliefs. The controlling ideologies of the triads  are engaged beyond agitation about their colonial or cultural origins , to proposing a constructive  solution via the triads’ critical re-conceptualization.

This conference adds a faith-dimension to the understanding of the relation of the triads, from  historical and theological standpoints. It seeks to navigate the issues via: Christian theological  articulation of the relation of politics and economy; and a theological critique of production,  distribution and consumption, with their mechanisms and end-users.

A major goal of the conference is to articulate an integrated, robust vision of a transformed African economy, holistically defined; and for its agents, both individual and corporate citizens, who are  defined by the emergent urban area, being carriers of a vision to affect the politics and economy of  their cities of origin or residence positively.

24-28 September 2015 SBS CONFERENCE ON:

ENGAGING SCRIPTURE, TRANSFORMING CULTURE:

EXEGESIS, CRITICISM, HERMENEUTICS AND THEOLOGY

@ ST. PAUL’S UNIVERSITY (LIMURU, KENYA)

PANEL & PAPER PROPOSALS INVITED FOR THIS COMBINED SBS CONFERENCE: DEADLINE IS 31 JULY.

THEME DESCRIPTION

How can biblical exegesis, criticism, hermeneutics and theology shape and contribute more meaningfully to our engagement of scriptures, esp. in Africa? Presenters and Panelists may focus on one or more of these four areas, but will need to be very conversant with the history, development and current state of research in each area in order to be able to evaluate the current enterprise of biblical studies, esp. in Africa, and propose major ways forward for the discipline. The second part of the theme explores the role of exegesis, criticism, hermeneutics and theology in transforming culture. Presenters are invited to explore the second part of the theme within an inter- or multidisciplinary context that bears on the study of the bible. Given this interdisciplinary focus, non-biblical specialists, esp. in literary, historical, sociological and anthropological studies in the university, are welcome to propose papers or panels for this conference. Papers presented are planned to be given responses. Select papers from this conference will be revised for a resource text for college, seminary and university students in biblical/religious/theological and cognate studies. The four sub-areas will form the major parts of the monograph that will be published from the conference, but explorations of each area would generally follow and could be as diverse as the areas defined for SBS congress learning sessions (CLS).

INSTITUTE FOR BIBLICAL PREACHING (IBP)

PREACHING, PRESENCE, PULPIT & PEDAGOGY

EQUIPPING THE MINISTERIAL CORPS OF THE CHURCH IN AFRICA, AND THE NIGERIAN CHURCH

2015 Institute 4 Biblical Preaching holds in:

 Lagos (18-19 September) &  Kenya (26-27 September)

Biblical preaching is the lifeline of the church’s ministry, and mission to the world. Preaching makes the minister, and good preaching makes a good society. As preaching goes, so goes the church—with society! This preaching institute is designed to sustain the art of preaching itself and shape a new level of discourse for theologically trained persons engaged in preaching ministry, and professors of homiletics. IBP holds preaching as a primary vehicle for realizing God’s divine presence in the world today; restores the centrality of the pulpit in ministry; and provides seminars/workshops for the preacher’s education and ministry in the context of a new African society.
